The American Institute of Biological Sciences is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) scientific association dedicated to advancing biological research and education for the welfare of society. AIBS works to ensure that the public, legislators, funders, and the community of biologists have access to and use information that will guide them in making informed decisions about matters that require biological knowledge. The organization does this through informing decisions by providing peer-reviewed or vetted information about the biology field and profession and by catalyzing action through building the capacity and the leadership of the community to address matters of common concern. Founded in 1947 as a part of the National Academy of Sciences, AIBS became an independent, member-governed organization in the 1950s. Today, AIBS has nearly 160 member organizations and is headquartered in Reston, VA, with a Public Policy Office in Washington, DC. Its approximately 40 staff members work to achieve its mission by publishing the peer-reviewed journal BioScience and the education Web site ActionBioscience.org, by providing scientific peer-review and advisory services to government agencies and other clients, and by collaborating with scientific organizations to advance public policy, education, and the public understanding of science.
The organization is guided by a strategic plan, released October 2012, with the endorsement of 24 recent AIBS presidents and acommentary article authored by Joseph Travis (2013 and 2010 President), James P. Collins (2011 President), and Susan G. Stafford (2012 President), who were all integral to the plan' s creation.
Our Leadership
In accordance with the AIBS Constitution and Bylaws, we are governed by a Board of Directors elected by the membership each year. The Board is advised byprogrammatic committees and a Council of Representatives from AIBS' s many member societies and organizations. We are fortunate to have had many accomplished scientists serve as AIBS President over the years.
Our Community
AIBS works with any stakeholder that advances the broad field and profession of biology. Organizations and individuals partner with us on initiatives, work with us to identify and communicate matters of common concern, and help connect us to their communities for idea and information exchange--particularly regarding public policy, education, public understanding of science, and matters of professional concern.
AIBS has individual members and member societies and organizations that support our work financially.
AIBS has clients from government agencies to biological societies and other nonprofits that use our expert services for a fee.

The People at AIBS
We have almost 40 staff working in three offices: AIBS headquarters in Reston, Virginia, which houses our IT operations and Scientific Peer Advisory and Review Services (SPARS) division; our Public Policy Office in downtown Washington, D.C.; and our business office, in McLean, Virginia. AIBS has a robust telecommuting policy, with additional programmatic staff working off site from Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Florida.
