The need for a detailed understanding of the biology, ecology and performance of plants has never been greater. It is estimated that by 2050 there will be 10 billion people on the planet, escalating pressure for the production of a readily available and nutritious supply of food, renewable energy and plant-based chemical feedstocks, all of which must be generated in a sustainable manner. Meeting the needs of a growing human population has brought the ‘grand challenges’ of hunger and malnutrition, sustainable intensification and climate change to the foreground of political and socio-economic discussions. Plant Science will be essential to provide solutions to this problems.
The Global Plant Council was therefore formed to bring plant scientists across the world together, to generate a critical mass and therefore a stronger voice for plant science in the global debate. As of 2013 the Global Plant Council is a coalition of over 25 plant and crop science societies from across the globe. The wide geographical spread and diversity of expertise of the GPC member organisations and societies will not only provide access to the remarkable scientific talent that exists in plant biology across the globe but will also incorporate region-specific viewpoints on how global issues impact specific societies and cultures. GPC will work in partnership with national and international networks and organisations that are striving to bring plant and crop science into the policy and decision making arena, in order to help solve and mitigate the current problems facing humanity.
